MPs have voted to progress assisted suicide legislation from Kim Leadbeater MP by 330 votes to 275. The Bill will proceed to further scrutiny, and it is still possible that it will be voted down.
Dr Miro Griffiths, spokesman for the Better Way campaign, commented:
“Today’s debate clearly underlined the insoluble problems with assisted suicide. This practice endangers disabled and vulnerable people. There is no way to rule out abuses and mistakes, coercion, and people acting on internal or external pressure to end their lives.
“We’d urge politicians to think again, and devote all their energy to improving ethical and progressive forms of support: blanket suicide prevention, palliative care, and measures that create a more inclusive society for disabled people. There is a better way forward.”
