Campaigners have expressed concern that ‘assisted dying’ legislation due to be debated at Westminster is not receiving appropriate scrutiny.
Better Way notes that a Bill from Kim Leadbeater MP still hasn’t been published just weeks before a significant debate in the Commons.
Dr Miro Griffiths, spokesman for Better Way, commented: “We are deeply concerned that the ‘assisted dying’ legislation due for consideration shortly by MPs is not enjoying an appropriate level of scrutiny. We are five weeks away from Kim Leadbeater’s Bill being debated, yet the Bill itself has yet to be published. This does not inspire confidence in the drafting.
“Parliamentarians and the public deserve the opportunity to give this Bill and the issues it raises deep and considered reflection – something that is currently being denied. We strongly urge MPs to vote against the Bill and instead support the establishment of a Commission on Palliative and End-of-Life Care, to examine ethical and effective ways to meet the needs of terminally ill Britons.”
