Experts have warned that the UK cancer care system faces a “critical breaking point”.
Dr Miro Griffiths, spokesman for Better Way, commented:
“A ‘cancer crisis’ makes the prospect of ‘assisted dying’ in the UK even more concerning. Delayed treatment for this disease is now said to be ‘normal’.
“People in deprived areas have a significantly higher risk of dying from cancer than those in more affluent areas, and they are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at advanced stages. Those experiencing socioeconomic deprivation also have decreased access to palliative care.
“It’s not hard to see how assisted suicide would lead to injustices in this context. The poorest in society would feel pressure to end their lives arising from an unjust lack of support. Politicians must decide if they want to open the door to this frightening, unprecedented situation.
“We call on UK politicians to reject unsafe and unworkable ‘assisted dying’ legislation. Instead, they can enhance truly ethical and progressive forms of support, and work towards a more equal society.”
